Having slid this disc into the car stereo, knowing the calibre of this band, I was still surprised by the power of the magic that is Daisy West. The opening track, (Stand Up) declares with the intensity of a frustrated percussionist, HERE COME THE FUCKING DRUMS! This is music that brings out the inner tribal hero, chair dancing and steering wheel drumming with a sense of angst that is so much richer and deeper than anything a teenager could throw at you. There is life and death within the sonic texture, blood and magic in the chords, wailing and catharsis it the songs. As a songwriter, the people in our lives are who feature in our songs and to have someone declare that they “Can’t Stop Thinking About You” immortalised in song deserves its own special brand of chills. There is a delicious sexiness to the voice that Blin Van Heems embodies, delivering hand-plucked songs from her garden. Hints of a dark mistress flowing through to the innocence of an earth angel. It is a glorious journey. I occasionally had visions of guttering candles within naves of holy spaces are bought to life within a field of flowers. “I’m batshit crazy I am total disgrace! Forgive Me” has lodged in my thoughts and will never leave. The pure fun of “Dance”, the Punk influences in “Johnny” and ‘Little Darlings”, the guitar driving you to the point of drink and then pulls you back from the edge of the cliff corner. This album is an invitation to journey into Rock and Roll, Dandenong Ranges style and the only thing common about Daisy West’s debut full lengther is the title. But only if you are into latin.
